A band of thieves stole all four tires and rims from seven parked cars in North Massapequa and Hicksville over the weekend, Nassau County police said.
Grainy surveillance video from a home where one of the thefts occurred showed four of the five men quickly jacking up a car, removing the tires and rims and loading them in the back of a minivan. A fifth man stood lookout at the corner of the block, police said.
All the men wore what appeared to be hooded sweatshirts, and their facial features were not clear on the video.
Nassau County police said the first theft occurred about 1 a.m. Saturday and the final one about 6 a.m. Sunday.
Deputy Inspector Gary Shapiro, a department spokesman, said officers were trying to find other security videos and asked anyone who had information about the thefts to call Crime Stoppers at 800-244-TIPS (8477).
Shapiro declined to say whether the thefts might have been related to similar ones going back to February, but added, "This was a concentrated cluster of events that happened very close together."
In February, Nassau County police said someone had been stealing tires and rims off late-model Mercedes-Benzes parked outside homes in Valley Stream, Roslyn Heights, Massapequa and other communities across the county. In all, 26 vehicles were targeted between Nov. 3 of last year and Feb. 16, usually in the early morning hours. Police said at the time that they did not know why those two models were targeted.
