Nassau puts up five more red-light cameras

Nassau County residents will start the first workweek of the new year with five more intersections with red-light cameras to catch traffic violators.

According to the Nassau County government Web site, 20 intersections have red-light cameras. When the measure was proposed by outgoing County Executive Thomas Suozzi and approved by the county legislature, it called for cameras to be placed at 50 intersections and was expected to bring in more than $20 million in 2010.

The additional red-light camera intersections were announced Thursday and will become operational Monday at 12:01 a.m., authorities said.
