Areas of shroud-like, dense fog that made driving treacherous Monday morning have lifted and the National Weather Service has dropped a dense fog advisory issued for Suffolk.

The fog created not only dangerous road conditions, but led to early morning delays at Kennedy and LaGuardia airports. The Federal Aviation Administration was citing unspecified equipment problems at LaGuardia that, just before noon Monday, were causing delays of close to two hours to arriving flights. There were also arrival and departure delays of up to half an hour at Newark Liberty. The FAA advises travelers to check with their airlines to see if their flights are affected.

The weather service had issued its dense fog advisory around 2 a.m. and said it would be in effect until 8 a.m.

In that statement, the weather service said: "A dense fog advisory means visibilities will frequently be reduced to one-quarter mile or less. If driving, slow down. Use your low-beam headlights and leave plenty of distance before you in case a sudden stop is needed."

The fog conditions were caused by "abundant low-level moisture" in the air and "nearly calm winds," forecasters said.

That fog had mostly burned off by about 8 a.m. and temperatures are expected to rise into the mid-60s later in the day.

However, forecasters are calling for winds to pick up as the day moves into afternoon -- and there is a chance of rain or drizzle overnight into Tuesday. Showers are expected Tuesday, when temperatures hover in the low 50s. Those temperatures are expected to fall back into the 30 overnight this week and by Thursday the high will only be in the 40s.
