A man traveling with his wife and their 6-year-old daughter was killed late Tuesday when their car was struck by an impaired teenage driver in New Hyde Park, Nassau police said Wednesday.

Police did not release the victim's name, identifying him only as a 55-year-old male. His wife, 38, was found unconscious at the scene, police said, and their daughter fractured her leg.

The driver of the other car, identified by police as Deepak Kumar, 17, of 1410 S. Park Place, New Hyde Park, was arrested at the scene, police said.

He was charged with second-degree vehicular manslaughter and with driving while ability impaired by drugs. Police did not specify the type of drugs.

Kumar was transported to a hospital for observation. Police said four passengers were in Kumar's vehicle. None was injured.

Kumar is a 2014 New Hyde Park Memorial High School graduate who recently enrolled in Nassau Community College, friend Aryaan Khan, who visited the crash site Wednesday, said.

Khan, 20, of Bethpage said he was shocked at the charges against Kumar.

"He's always been in the positive side," Khan said, adding, "I feel bad for the other family, too."

Khan, also an NCC student, said the two had planned to register for classes Wednesday. He said Kumar, a native of Karachi, Pakistan, works with his father's import and export business.

Kumar, who lives blocks from the crash site, might have been dropping his friends off, Khan said.

Kumar's older sister, who answered the door at the family's home, declined to comment Wednesday. Khan said Kumar's parents are on their way back from a vacation in Pakistan.

Police said the victim's vehicle, a 2012 Ford Fusion, heading south on Covert Avenue, was struck by the 2003 Toyota Camry being driven west by Kumar on Second Avenue.

The vehicles collided at the intersection shortly before 11:30 p.m., police said.

Police said the victim's wife and daughter were taken to a hospital for treatment. Their conditions were not known.

Both vehicles were impounded for safety checks.

Kumar is scheduled for arraignment Thursday in First District Court in Hempstead.
