An Oceanside man was rushed to a hospital with burns over 50 percent of his body after a backyard barbecue explosion late Thursday morning, fire officials said.
The explosion, reported in a 911 call at 11:37 a.m., occurred at a home on Bayside Avenue.
Oceanside Fire Chief John T. Madden said volunteers responded to the residence and brought the victim, 64, to South Nassau Communities Hospital in Oceanside.
Madden said because of the nature of the burns to the man’s upper body, face and hands, as well as possible respiratory issues caused by superheated air, he was brought to the closest hospital.
Madden said the Nassau County fire marshal’s office is investigating the cause of the explosion.
“According to him,” Madden said of the victim, “he had the fire going — and something just exploded.”
Madden said the explosion did not occur when the barbecue was being lit, but after it had been on for a while.
No one else was injured.
