George W. Hewlett High School was briefly placed on lockdown early Friday after police responded to a report about a student at the school in possession of a gun, a school spokeswoman said.

A police spokesman confirmed officers responded to the school at 60 Everit Ave., Hewlett, shortly before 10:45 a.m. He had no other information.

Joseph DiBartolo, a spokesman for the Hewlett-Woodmere School District said school officials received an anonymous report of a student with a gun. He said police investigated and determined the report was unfounded.

During the investigation, the school was on lockdown for between 45 minutes and an hour, he said.

DiBartolo said the school and police were investigating and did not have more details. "Right now, we're still trying to find more information," he said.

DiBartolo said the school was back on its regular schedule before noon and "everyone is safe."
