Officials: Fatal fire in Glen Cove

Fire officials confirmed there was a fatal fire Sunday night in Glen Cove, but said the blaze was under investigation and they could not provide details.

The fire was one of a handful overnight in Nassau and Suffolk, police and fire officials said. Officials said those fires were reported in Hempstead, Wantagh, Commack, Miller Place and Manhasset Hills.

Glen Cove Fire Chief Rodni N. Leftwich confirmed the fatality occurred as the result of a fire on Whitney Circle that was reported just before 10 p.m.

He said the Nassau County fire marshal was investigating, and, at least initially, the cause of the fire does not appear post-Sandy related.

Meanwhile, fire officials said firefighters from Hempstead, West Hempstead, South Hempstead, Uniondale, Baldwin and Franklin Square battled a blaze at a home on Front Street and Cameron Avenue Monday.

There was another fire on Hampton Court in Wantagh, though officials did not have details immediately available.

Police said a woman was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital with unspecified injuries after being rescued from an early morning fire on Elder Drive in Commack.

That blaze was reported about 4:45 a.m.

Another fire on Helme Avenue in Miller Place was reported at 4:11 a.m., but police said details were not available.
