A Manhasset church was broken into this weekend, and the church's checkbook was stolen from the pastor's office, church officials said Sunday.

Trustee Edward Corley, of Mount Olive Baptist Church, said the thieves "ransacked the office a little bit," but church officials have so far only identified the checkbook as missing.

"They should have taken a Bible or two, but they didn't take one of those," Corley told Newsday. He said a first-story window was pried open sometime between Friday night and Sunday morning, when parishioners coming to worship discovered the burglary.

Gary Jones, a parishioner at the church, said, "When it comes to churches and children, it hurts."

Nassau County police confirmed they were investigating an incident at the church, but had no additional details.
