Tempers flared among two groups of sunbathers at Jones Beach on the hottest day of the year Wednesday, culminating in a brawl of about 50 people, police said. Another fight was reported at Robert Moses State Park.
At Jones Beach, one person was arrested and two were taken for hospital treatment, New York State park police said.
"This was the first big one [fight]," said Park Police Capt. Bruce Marx. "When you get the hot, hot days, that's when you get the problem. Hot, humid days."
Temperatures reached about 90 degrees on the beach Wednesday.
Marx said it was unclear what started the fight, but alcohol was the fuel.
Another disturbance took place at Robert Moses State Park Wednesday evening, and state park police asked for and received help from Suffolk police units.
The Jones Beach fight appeared to start on the beach near the ice cream parlor about 2:45 p.m., Marx said. About a dozen park police officers responded, then sought additional help.
The brawl consisted primarily of fist fighting, but one 19-year-old Queens man was struck in the mouth with a bottle and hospitalized.
