The family that owns Marshall's Ice Cream Bar, on the corner of Merrick Road and Route 107 in Massapequa, has been serving up ice cream for nearly six decades.
Opened by Philip Vultaggio as a Carvel in 1952, the parlor and many of the properties surrounding it sit on what used to be the Massapequa Golf Course. Vultaggio purchased part of the course and built houses, an adjacent burger-and-frank joint, and Marshall’s, said Iole Liegey, Vultaggio's granddaughter, who helps run the takeout bar.
"We take pride in our product," said Liegey, who grew up in Massapequa and has been working at Marshall’s since she was tall enough to reach the counter.
Liegey said her parents, the parlor’s current owners, decided to go independent with the business to sell a wider variety of flavors and ingredients.
Marshall's flavors include black raspberry truffle, peanut butter fluff and coffee chocolate drizzle.
Customer Tom Tuohy of Seaford said he has been buying Coke floats from Marshall's three times a week for the past 15 years. Marshall’s is “the best,” he said.
Tuohy said the shop’s community feel and gluten-free ice cream bring him back every week.
Marshall's Ice Cream Bar is open every day from 10:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m.
