Pedestrian hit in Freeport by minivan critical, cops say

A pedestrian was in critical condition after being struck by a minivan pushed into him when it was struck by another car Sunday evening in Freeport.

The identity of the pedestrian, a 62-year-old man, was not released by police.

Nassau County police said the accident occurred at the intersection of Merrick Road and Buffalo Avenue at 6:36 p.m.

Police said the pedestrian suffered “severe head trauma” when he was struck on the southeast corner of the intersection by a 2001 Dodge Caravan driven by a 26-year-old man.

Police said the minivan was making a left-hand turn onto Buffalo Avenue when it was struck by a 2013 Toyota Prius being driven eastbound on Merrick Road by a 67-year-old woman whose identity also was not released. The force of the impact then drove the minivan into the pedestrian, police said.

Both drivers were transported to a hospital, where they were treated and released.

Their vehicles were impounded for safety checks.

Police said no one has been charged.
