A driver from Point Lookout has been jailed on $250,000 cash or $400,000 bond bail in the hit-and-run death of a pedestrian in Long Beach, police said.
Shawn Gallivan, 22, is accused of striking David King, 53, sometime before 3:18 a.m. Saturday and leaving him lying in the street at Long Beach Boulevard and East Broadway, Long Beach City police said.
At the arraignment Sunday, Judge Stan Smolkin ordered Gallivan to the Nassau County jail in East Meadow until the bail is posted, said police spokesman Lt. Bruce Meyer. As of Sunday afternoon, Meyer said, Gallivan hadn't posted bail. He is due in Long Beach court again Monday.
Gallivan, arrested about 11:15 a.m., is facing a felony charge of leaving the scene of a fatal crash, police said. A teacher, he became a suspect after a witness gave a description of a vehicle detectives traced to Gallivan, police said.
King was pronounced dead at 3:30 a.m. - about 12 minutes after officers checking out a tip found him in the street.When police found him, King, who lives nearby, was unconscious with severe head trauma, police said.
