Police: Copiague man succumbs to injuries sustained in crash

A 65-year-old Copiague man died early Friday from injuries sustained as a passenger in an SUV that struck two bicyclists and crashed into a house, Nassau police said.

Duane Nuccio was being treated at Nassau University Medical Center for “contusions to the head” after the June 29 accident in Hicksville, police said.

Authorities said Cari Widmyer, 43, of Hicksville, who was bicycling with her father, was pronounced dead at the scene on New South Road shortly after the 2:40 p.m. crash. Her father, 72, whose name was not released, sustained a knee injury and was treated and released, police said.

The driver, 57, whose name was also not released, suffered cuts and chest contusions after her 2002 Ford Explorer struck Widmyer and then her father.

After hitting the bicyclists, the SUV sideswiped a car and slammed into a brick house — destroying its front porch, police said.

The driver initially was headed south, the police said, but crossed into the northbound lane for “unknown reasons,” according to Det. Capt. John Azzata.

No criminality was involved, police said.
