Police are searching for a suspect who fired gunshots from a vehicle in Hempstead on Sunday, striking a 21-year-old who was driving in the opposite direction.
Police said the victim of the 3:41 p.m. shooting on Stewart Avenue was seriously wounded. His condition was not known Monday.
Nassau County police said the victim, whose identity was not released, was driving north on Stewart when three or four shots were fired from a southbound car -- one of the bullets striking the victim "in the upper chest." The victim was then transported to a hospital via private car.
The intended target of the attack was not immediately clear. Police said one of the bullets also struck a house on Stewart Avenue, but no one at the home was injured.
The shooting is under investigation by detectives from the Major Case Bureau, Special Investigation Squad.
Police are asking anyone with information call Crime Stoppers at 800-244-TIPS. All calls will remain confidential.
