A 33-year-old Islip man was arrested Thursday and charged with driving while impaired by drugs after State Police investigators spotted his black Jeep driving erratically on the Northern State Parkway in Plainview, police said.

Raymond Chan of 160 St. Marks St. faces a driving on drugs charge, seventh-degree criminal possession of drugs, unsafe lane change and crossing road hazard markings.

He is scheduled to appear in First District Court in Hempstead on Jan. 29, police said.

Police said Chan was stopped on the eastbound Northern State near Exit 37, Manetto Hill Road, in Plainview at 9:16 a.m. Thursday.

Police said the investigators noticed Chan driving the Jeep onto the shoulder, then back into lanes of traffic. During a stop, police said, Chan "displayed signs of intoxication" and said that when asked to exit the vehicle, he was "unable to stand by himself."

Police said Chan then told them he had used cocaine "a couple of hours prior."

Police said Chan told them he also had cocaine and Xanax in his pockets. The substances were seized.
