A man may lose his legs after being pinned between two vehicles on the Southern State Parkway in Malverne on Friday, a crash that shut down the eastbound lanes for more than five hours, state police said.
He was undergoing surgery at South Nassau Communities Hospital in Oceanside late Friday night and was in stable condition, police said.
He and another motorist had gotten out of their vehicles just before 5:35 p.m. after a minor collision by Exit 17 and were discussing the crash when another vehicle crashed into one of their cars, police said.
The first two vehicles were stopped just after a crest in the roadway and it’s likely the third driver did not see them in time, police said.
It did not appear the other drivers were injured, police said.
The parkway was reopened just before 11 p.m.
