Queens man accused of Freeport kidnap, robbery

A Queens man is facing charges that he kidnapped and robbed an 18-year-old man in Freeport late on New Year's Day, Nassau County police said Saturday.

Darnell Greene, 30, of East Elmhurst, approached the man, who was trying to fix a mirror on his parked car on Lena Avenue, and demanded a ride to Queens at about 10:25 p.m. Friday, police said. When the 18-year-old refused, Greene brandished a gun and forced the victim into the passenger side of the victim's 1997 Honda, police said.

Greene, who was driving the Honda, swerved erratically on the Southern State Parkway, heading west, and continued to threaten the victim, police said. The victim tried to regain control of the car, police said, and between exits 15 and 16, the Honda crashed.

The victim, whom police did not identify, wrestled the gun away from Greene and fled to safety, police said.

Officers from the Fifth Precinct arrested Greene on North Fletcher Avenue near Bowe Road in North Valley Stream, police said.

In addition to charges of robbery and kidnapping, Greene was charged with criminal use of a firearm, criminal possession of a weapon and reckless endangerment, police said.

Greene was in police custody Saturday morning awaiting arraignment in First District Court in Hempstead.
