A Queens man has been arrested in a September home burglary in Garden City in which police said a homeowner returned to find the man fleeing with jewelry.

Robert E. Washington, 50, of 110-10 200th St., St. Albans, was arrested Friday in a Queens hotel, Nassau County police said, on charges of first-degree robbery, first-degree burglary, third-degree grand larceny and unlawful possession of marijuana.

Washington was ordered held on $100,250 cash bail or bond at his arraignment Saturday in First District Court in Hempstead. He is due back in court Nov. 6.

According to detectives, a 55-year-old woman arrived home about 11:40 a.m. Sept. 20 to find an unfamiliar vehicle parked in her Garden City driveway.

Police said as she approached the house, on Pell Terrace, she saw the suspect leaving with a pillowcase full of her jewelry. When the victim confronted the suspect, police said, he threatened to shoot her. No weapon was seen, police said.

Washington fled in the vehicle with the jewelry, according to police.

Detectives used physical evidence left at the scene to locate Washington in a Queens hotel on Friday, police said.

At the time of the arrest the defendant was in possession of a clear plastic bag of marijuana, police said. None of the jewelry was recovered, police said.
