Road reopens after gas leak in Franklin Square

A homeowner who was gardening hit a gas line with his shovel Tuesday morning, causing a leak and taking out service to his Franklin Square home, a spokeswoman for National Grid said. No other customers were affected or evacuated, and the area was made safe as of 11:39 a.m., she said.

The leak was reported at 456 Dogwood Ave. at 10:38 a.m., police and fire officials said. Dogwood Avenue was temporarily closed between Morton Avenue and Forte Boulevard.

The fire official had earlier said the leak resulted from a contractor's machine hitting a line, and he believed there were no injuries.
