Royston Ferguson, NYPD officer from Baldwin, killed in off-duty motorcycle crash, police say

An off-duty NYPD officer from Baldwin was killed Monday when his motorcycle crashed into a sport utility vehicle in Brooklyn, police said.

Royston Ferguson, 35, was riding a 2008 Ducati south on Rockaway Parkway, between Avenue J and Flatlands Avenue, in Canarsie at about 7 p.m. when he hit an SUV driven by a woman, 28, police said Wednesday.

The SUV, a 2015 Kia Sorento, was traveling north and its driver was "in the process of making a U-turn across the double yellow divider lines to go southbound on Rockaway Parkway," police said. The motorcycle struck the passenger-side front door of the Kia, causing the motorcyclist to be ejected.

Ferguson was taken to Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

The driver of the SUV was taken to Kings County Hospital Center with neck and back pain, police said. Her passengers, two 3-year-old boys, were not injured.

Police said Ferguson worked at the Brooklyn North Precinct and would have celebrated his 10th year as an NYPD officer in July.
