School evacuated after unused bullet found, officials say

Students and staff at Locust Valley Middle School/High School were evacuated Thursday morning after an unused .22-caliber bullet was found in the girls’ locker room, police and school officials said.

Nassau police responded at 7:20 a.m. to a call from the school on Horse Hollow Road, a police spokeswoman said. They did not find anything and no arrests were made, she said.

The matter is under investigation, the police spokeswoman said.

Students and staff were evacuated to the school’s adjacent soccer field, a spokeswoman for the district said. They were allowed to re-enter the complex from 10:30 to 10:45 a.m. and classes resumed.

The district said 1,186 students in grades six through 12 are enrolled in the middle school and high school.

“As always, the safety of our students and staff continues to be our highest priority,” the district spokeswoman said.
