A mini school bus carrying private day-school children caught fire Wednesday morning in Hicksville, but authorities said the seven children and two adults aboard escaped safely.

The engine of the bus began smoking at 9:13 a.m. on Second Street near Newbridge Road, police said. The driver pulled over, and everyone on board was evacuated before flames were visible.

Volunteers from the Hicksville Fire Department put out the blaze, which fully engulfed the vehicle.

The bus was taking the children to the Carousel Day School in Hicksville. A woman who answered a phone at the elementary school declined to comment.
