Sex offender pleads guilty to child porn

A Baldwin man who was already a convicted Level 3 sex offender pleaded guilty Wednesday to child pornography charges after investigators found numerous photographs and videos at his home, prosecutors said.

Charles Weaver, 55, pleaded guilty to three counts of promoting a sexual performance by a child as a sexually motivated felony, prosecutors said.

Judge William O'Brien promised to sentence Weaver to 15 years in prison Aug. 23 in exchange for his plea.

DA investigators caught Weaver trading child pornography over the Internet in August and September 2011, prosecutors said. They then executed a search warrant at Weaver's home and found 75 to 100 images of child pornography, including at least 50 videos, prosecutors said. Weaver admitted he had images and videos featuring children between the ages of 7 and 10.

Weaver served 10 years in prison after being convicted in 1990 of sodomizing a 10-year-old girl in Staten Island, prosecutors said.

He later pleaded guilty to failing to register as a sex offender and served one year in jail, prosecutors said.

He is represented by the Nassau County Legal Aid Society, which does not comment on individual cases.

"Mr. Weaver is among the worst of the worst offenders against children, and the only way to prevent this predator from victimizing innocent children again is to lock him away," Nassau District Attorney Kathleen Rice said in a statement.
