Victim in fatal shooting identified as Hempstead resident

The victim of a fatal shooting Wednesday in Hempstead has been identified as a local resident, Nassau police said Thursday.

Ehrik Williams, 25, of Hempstead, was shot several times, just down the block from his home, shortly before 9:40 a.m., police said.

Hempstead Village officers found him on the roadway at the corner of Morrell Street and Morton Avenue after a 911 caller reported hearing gunfire, police said.

Williams was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 10:17 a.m., police said.

Homicide detectives Thursday night were trying to piece together what happened, including whether there is more than one person involved, if there was an argument before the shooting, and how the shooter or shooters got away.

Williams lived with his family, who last saw him at the house at 8:30 a.m. the morning of his death, police said.

Investigators were awaiting reports of ballistics tests and declined to release other details on the case, including the number of times Williams was shot.

Homicide detectives said they hope the public will come forward with information and contact Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 800-244-TIPS. All callers will remain anonymous.
