An Elmont man was killed after being struck by a car early Monday on the eastbound Southern State Parkway in North Valley Stream, State Police said.
The accident occurred near Exit 15 at 12:29 a.m. The New York State Department of Transportation said the eastbound roadway was closed in the area as a result at 12:37 a.m.
The road reopened before sunrise.
Police said the victim, identified as Joseph Saganek, 43, was “standing in the roadway” when he was struck and killed by a 2006 Infiniti M45. Saganek was pronounced dead at the scene.
It was not immediately clear if the incident was storm-related. Police said the victim’s car was found on the shoulder near the accident scene, though it was unclear why the victim would have been in the roadway after leaving his vehicle.
The driver of the Infiniti that struck Saganek was not charged. That driver’s identity has not been released.
Police said the investigation is continuing and investigators are asking anyone with information to call them at 631-756-3300.
