The westbound Southern State Parkway near Eagle Avenue will be partially closed for various periods, starting Thursday night, to extend the westbound entrance ramp so motorists may merge more easily, state Department of Transportation officials announced.
Officials said one or two westbound lanes will be closed between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m., Monday through Friday for about two weeks, then one westbound lane will be closed between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. on weekdays for about one month, followed by another week of the nighttime closures on weekdays.
The ramp is at Exit 18, near Hempstead Lake State Park. "It's one of the busiest entrances to any of our parkways," said Eileen Peters, a DOT spokeswoman, adding that 229,000 cars travel on that part of the highway each day.
"They will make the entrance ramp longer to give you more time to merge."The project is one of 15 locations slated for improvement under the agency's $4.8 million motorist safety improvement project.
Officials said motorists will be advised of the closing via INFORM highway signs and that they recommend drivers use other routes to avoid delays.
