Cops: Man wields machete during attempted 7-Eleven robbery in Massapequa

Nassau County police are searching for a man who attempted to rob a 7-Eleven in Massapequa on Saturday morning while brandishing a machete but was scared off when the clerk told him that cops were on their way into the store.

Detectives said the suspect entered the store, at 4222 Sunrise Hwy., at 4:39 a.m. wearing a black ski mask while holding a machete. He then demanded cash from a 36-year-old male clerk.

The clerk then pointed at the window and yelled that the police were coming into the store, detectives said. The suspect then fled out the front door without any cash.

There were no reported injuries and the suspect was last seen heading south on Hicksville Road, police said.

The suspect is described as between 5-foot-7 and 5-foot-10, wearing a ripped dark sweatshirt with "Farmingdale" lettering, gray pants and white sneakers.

Detectives ask that anyone with information contact Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 800-244-TIPS. All callers will remain anonymous.
