Syosset man charged with drunken boating

A Syosset man, 51, was arrested and charged with boating while intoxicated Monday after Bay Constable John Schmidt of the Town of Oyster Bay stopped his boat for excessive speed in a Massapequa canal, a town spokeswoman said.

Douglas Mandresh was operating a 19-foot Four Winns boat in Jones Creek, also known as the Burns Park Canal, when he was stopped, officials said.

An investigation determined Mandresh was intoxicated, officials said, and he was charged with operating a vessel while intoxicated, imprudent speed, excessive wake and operating an unregistered vessel.

It was not immediately clear when Mandresh was due in court, officials said.

The stop was made at 4:50 p.m. Officials said the maximum legal speed in the creek is 5 mph -- though it was not clear how fast Mandresh was allegedly traveling at the time.

Oyster Bay has 22 bay constables and nine patrol units.
