Taxi driver robbed at gunpoint in New Cassel, police say

A taxi driver responding to a call was robbed at gunpoint Monday night in New Cassel after police said his would-be fare turned out to be a robber.

Nassau County police said the robbery occurred on Dogwood Lane at 10:55 p.m.

There were no reported injuries, police said.

Police said the driver, whose cab company was not identified, responded to a call on Dogwood Lane and that, upon arrival, a man entered the cab.

Moments later, though, police said the fare put a black handgun to the driver's head and demanded his wallet.

The driver handed over his wallet and the robber then fled the cab on foot, last seen headed toward the Park Avenue School, police said.

Police said the robber was thin and wore a ski mask.

Police ask anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers at 800-244-TIPS. All calls will remain confidential.
