A traffic stop for speeding on the Southern State Parkway in North Bellmore led to the arrest of two Hempstead men after a loaded handgun was found in the car, State Police said Monday.

The stop occurred near Exit 26, Bellmore Road, at 1:39 a.m. Saturday. The car, a black BMW, was traveling at 81 mph in a 55 mph zone, police said.

Police said that troopers "detected the odor" of marijuana coming from the vehicle after the stop and said a search of the car led to the recovery of a loaded handgun. What type of gun was unclear.

Arrested were the driver, identified as Paul Larue, 32, of Hempstead, and passenger Chris Maddox, 31, also of Hempstead. Both were charged with third-degree criminal possession of a weapon. Records indicate both men have prior weapons convictions. Larue also was issued a speeding ticket.

Both men were arraigned on Saturday and ordered held on $5,000 bond or $2,500 cash bail. Records indicate neither man made bail. Both men were due back in court Monday.
