Two pedestrians injured after being struck in West Hempstead

Two pedestrians suffered head trauma after they were struck by a car late Sunday while crossing Hempstead Turnpike in West Hempstead.

A man, 31, and a woman, 35, were crossing Hempstead Turnpike from north to south near Garden City Boulevard when they were struck by a car traveling east on the turnpike at 11:35 p.m., police said in a news release.

The female pedestrian suffered severe head trauma and was airlifted by a Nassau County police helicopter to a hospital for treatment. The male pedestrian also suffered head trauma and was taken to a hospital by Nassau County police ambulance.

A Nassau County police spokesman declined to identify the pedestrians and driver, or say where they were hospitalized.

The male driver, 65, of a 1998 Ford sedan was taken by a Nassau County ambulance to a hospital, where he was treated for lacerations to his hands, police said.

The vehicle was impounded for a safety check. Fourth Squad detectives report no apparent criminality connected the accident at this time.

The investigation is ongoing, police said.
