Police arrested Clifton Phillips, 32, of 689 Lafayette Ave., Uniondale, after responding to a call Monday at 2:04 a.m. about a one-car accident on the eastbound parkway near Exit 22, the Meadowbrook Parkway.
Phillips' black Buick hit the trees and pole before coming to a stop, police said, and Phillips and a front-seat passenger were trapped in the vehicle.
Both had to be cut from car, police said, and Phillips was the first to be freed. But as workers concentrated on freeing his passenger, Phillips became combative and tried to stop them, police said.
Phillips also had poor motor coordination and a strong odor of alcohol on his breath, police said.
Phillips and the passenger were taken to Nassau University Medical Center. Phillips had minor abrasions to his hand and the passenger had a broken leg, police said.
Phillips was charged with driving while intoxicated, obstructing governmental administration, resisting arrest, vehicular assault, aggravated unlicensed operation of a vehicle, and several vehicle and traffic violations, police said.
A blood sample was secured to determine his blood alcohol content, police said.
Phillips was scheduled for arraignment at First District Court in Hempstead.
