A Valley Stream man who was drag racing with two other drivers on the Wantagh State Parkway died when he hit a tree, State Police said in a news release yesterday. The other drivers were charged with manslaughter.

Jose Ramos, 30, of Valley Stream, was the only person killed Friday when his 2002 Chevrolet Impala headed south on the parkway, onto the right shoulder, and then hit a tree.

"Initial investigation indicates speed was the primary cause of the accident and that Ramos' vehicle and two others were involved in a racing contest," a news release posted on the State Police Web site said.

The crash occurred just north of Sunrise Highway Friday at 3:53 p.m. Police said Ramos was driving at a high speed.

The drivers of the other two vehicles, Hector Manual Velasquez Macedo, 28, of Baldwin, and Denis O. Cardona, 33, of Freeport, were arrested and charged with manslaughter in Ramos' death.

Macedo and Cardona each were charged with second-degree manslaughter, second-degree reckless endangerment and aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle. They were scheduled to be arraigned Saturday.
