Wantagh man charged with DWI, State Police say

A Wantagh man was charged with unlawfully fleeing a police officer and drunken driving after he fled from a trooper who tried to stop him from driving his motorcycle at 90 mph Sunday on the Wantagh State Parkway, New York State Police said.

Dennis Vogel, 48, was charged with felony driving while intoxicated, felony unlicensed operation, third-degree unlawful fleeing of a police officer and several traffic infractions. State Police said he was held for arraignment Monday in First District Court in Hempstead.

Police said a trooper tried to stop Vogel Sunday at 4:47 p.m. after clocking him at 90 mph in a 55-mph zone on the northbound Wantagh Parkway south of Merrick Road in Wantagh.

Vogel fled, police said, then exited onto eastbound Merrick Road and passed the Nassau County Seventh Precinct in Seaford. A Nassau County police officer alerted State Police, and the trooper then located the motorcycle on Roanoke Street south of Merrick Road.

Shortly afterward, police said, Vogel crashed the motorcycle into a parked vehicle and was arrested.
