A Carle Place High School junior will be able to bring her language studies to life after winning an all-expenses-paid trip to Spain this summer.
Sarah Laga, 16, is a recipient of the Bertie Green Junior Travel Award, given by the American Association of Teachers of Spanish & Portuguese. She is among 24 teens nationwide who are nonnative speakers of Spanish to win the trip.
"There aren't any words in English or Spanish to describe my excitement," Laga said.
The journey, which is July 22-29, will include visits to sites such as The Museo del Prado and Puerto del Sol in Madrid, which Laga compared to Times Square.
To apply, she wrote an essay about her interest in experiencing Spain's art and history. She also sent in a short video to demonstrate her conversational abilities in Spanish, two letters of recommendation, and a transcript of her school and other activities.
"Her diligence, interest, enthusiasm and work ethic are, in my opinion, the qualities that catapulted her to the winners' circle," Carle Place language teacher Rosa Perifimos said.
Laga also is a member of her school's National Honor Society and Spanish and math honor societies, as well as the student newspaper and volleyball and track teams.
