With melting snow refreezing overnight, the National Weather Service issued a special weather statement Thursday morning, warning motorists of icy roadways and slippery conditions.

The statement, posted at the service's website at 3:18 a.m., alerts drivers from Long Island, New York City and Connecticut that "melted snow and areas of standing water . . . has refrozen," causing slippery conditions and black ice.

"Many surfaces have already been treated from the storm earlier this week, which will help mitigate a widespread black-ice event," the statement said. "However, hazardous conditions are expected to be present on untreated roadways and sidewalks. Motorists are urged to exercise caution while driving this morning."
