Ocean Parkway will remain closed to motorists between the Wantagh State Parkway and Meadowbrook Parkway round-the-clock until the end of the month, state Department of Transportation officials said Monday.
Motorists seeking to travel west are being detoured northbound on the Wantagh to the turnaround south of the Jones Beach toll booths and then on to Bay Parkway westbound to the Meadowbrook, the department said in a release.
Eastbound Ocean Parkway motorists are unaffected by the closure, which is needed to reconstruct the pedestrian tunnel between Jones Beach parking field four and the central mall.
After westbound construction work is completed, a similar detour will be in place for eastbound construction work.
The reconstruction of the pedestrian tunnel is expected to be completed by the Memorial Day Holiday weekend.
Motorists are being warned in advance of the closures via electronic roadway signs but westbound Ocean Parkway motorists are urged to use alternate routes, such as NY Route 27/Sunrise Highway or Southern State Parkway to avoid delays. For 24/7 up-to-date traffic and travel information, motorists should call 511 or visit www.511NY.org.
