A burglary at a Westbury convenience store netted the thief or thieves $35,000 in cigarettes, $2,500 in cigars and an undisclosed amount of cash from two registers and an ATM that were pried open during the heist, Nassau police said.
An employee of the Old Country Food Mart at 962 Old Country Rd. opened the business Sunday morning at 7:15 a.m. and noticed the alarm was off, police said. The employee went inside the store and found a cash register, a lottery register and an ATM had been pried open and the cash inside was gone, police said.
The same employee told police he "closed and secured the business at 12:30 a.m." Sunday, police said.
Police determined that whoever burglarized the store entered through the roof by cutting a 2-foot by 2-foot hole in the roof. A DVD player that was part of the alarm system was also taken, police said.
