Westbury man burned in house fire, officials say

A Westbury man sustained burns in a fire that ripped through two floors of a home Sunday, authorities said.

Westbury Fire Department Chief Kenneth Gass said the department received a call reporting a blaze on Park Avenue at 6:51 p.m., and responded to the scene with backup from the Hicksville and Jericho fire departments.

The fire started in a first-floor bedroom, and soon spread to the second floor, Gass said.

When firefighters arrived they found a male resident of the home with burns on his body, and he was taken to Nassau University Medical Center to be treated. Gass said he did not have further details on the man’s condition.

The fire was put out about an hour after firefighters arrived, Gass said. The Nassau County fire marshal’s office and Nassau County Police Arson and Bomb Squad are investigating the cause of the fire, he said.

On Sunday night, neighbors including Paul Smith, 56, who lives a few blocks away, watched from the street to survey the damage.

“Thank God they put it out quickly,” Smith said.
