Three men abandon disabled boat, safely make it ashore, police say

Three Westbury men made their way safely to shore after their 16-foot vessel became disabled Sunday in waters off Oyster Bay, Nassau County police said.

The three men refused medical attention after leaving their partially submerged vessel and getting to shore near The Sand Hole, south of Lloyd Point, police said.

The three launched from the Oyster Bay boat ramp about 6 p.m. and then sent out a distress call after the vessel became disabled because of a mechanical failure, police said.

Police dispatched a marine vessel and a helicopter and found the disabled vessel floating toward Long Island Sound and the men on shore, according to a news release.

The boaters were "all medically screened and refused further medical attention," police said.
