Robbery, menacing incidents in Westbury may be related, police say

Nassau County police are trying to determine whether the assault and robbery of a woman and the report of another woman menacing a teenager with a gun -- both occurring Tuesday near retail shopping areas in Westbury -- are related.

"They're looking into the possibility that both incidents are connected," a police spokesman said Wednesday.

Police said in separate news releases a man and woman roughed up another woman who was loading packages into her car at about 5:05 p.m. in the Westbury Plaza parking lot at 1250 Old Country Rd. and that a woman also pulled a handgun on a 13-year-old girl who was walking with friends at about 5 p.m. in front of 467A Old Country Rd.

Several retail stores, including Costco, Marshalls and Walmart, are adjacent to the parking lot, and 467A Old Country Rd. is just across the street from the lot.

In the robbery, a man and a woman approached the victim, 63, as she loaded packages, police said. When they reached into her car to remove her pocketbook, a struggle ensued. As the victim tried to regain her property, police said, "the female subject then began punching the victim about her head, causing her to fall to the ground."

The two suspects then started to walk away and the victim began to follow them; however, the man "turned around and displayed the handle of a gun he had in his waistband," police said.

The victim returned to her car, drove to a bank and called 911, police said. She was taken to hospital with swelling and minor facial injuries, police said.

In the menacing report, police said, the 13-year-old girl was walking with her friends near 467A Old Country Rd. at about 5 p.m. when she accidentally bumped into another woman who was walking in the opposite direction.

Police said after the teen said, "Excuse me," the other woman "withdrew a black handgun and placed it up to the victim's neck and stated, 'What did you say?' "

After the girl repeated "Excuse me," the woman left and "continued down the sidewalk," police said.
