Wind, fog create airport delays

Fog and wind led to flight delays at New York area airports Monday afternoon, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

Windy conditions at LaGuardia Airport caused arriving flights to be delayed 1 hour and 50 minutes. Arrival delays caused by low clouds at Kennedy Airport ranged from 46 minutes to 1 hour, and 2 hours and 35 minutes at Newark Liberty Airport.

Due to poor weather, Southwest Airlines canceled flights scheduled at Long Island MacArthur Airport in Ronkonkoma. US Airways, which also serves the Long Island airport, was experiencing flight delays, too, airport officials said.

Jim Peters, a spokesman for the FAA, said that fog forced Kennedy Airport air traffic controls to use one runway for departures and one runway for arrivals Monday afternoon. Air traffic control officials were able to begin using a third runway for departures about 4:30 p.m.

Thousands of flights from local airports were canceled over the weekend due to the snowstorm that buried some areas of Long Island under as much as 33 inches of snow.
