A woman and a 4-year-old child in a booster seat were killed just before noon Sunday after the driver of the car they were riding in apparently had a medical emergency and crashed into a tree near The Source mall in Westbury, Nassau County police said.

Police said a 27-year-old man was driving a 2003 Mitsubishi Galant east on Old Country Road near Merchants Concourse at 11:55 a.m. when he swerved to the right, going over the curb and hitting a tree. Police did not say what the medical problem was.

His passengers, a 27-year-old woman in the front seat, and a 4-year-old boy sitting in the center position of the backseat, suffered multiple traumatic injuries and were taken to a hospital, where they were pronounced dead, police said.

The driver had multiple injuries also and was in a hospital, listed in serious but stable condition, police said.

The names of the victims had not been released last night.

Philip Bogdos, who owns the Majestic Diner on Old Country Road along with his sister and father, said he and his father rushed out to aid the victims after the crash, which he said happened about 200 feet east of the diner.

Bogdos said he saw the woman and the boy unconscious and pinned in the car. The driver was bloodied, dazed and crying out in Spanish for his wife and child.

"I was expecting the worst, and we got the worst," Bogdos said.
