Woman dies in East Norwich crash

An elderly woman pushing a shopping cart of groceries was struck and killed Tuesday afternoon as she crossed the road to go home, Nassau County police said.

Margaret Bolanos, 82, sustained a severe head injury when a 1998 Toyota Camry hit her at about 2 p.m., Nassau's Second Squad Det. Lt. Gregory Abruzzo said.

Bolanos -- in the middle of the roadway and not at a crosswalk -- had been crossing westbound in the middle of Pine Hollow Road, Route 106, from a Stop & Shop supermarket to her apartment complex, Norwich Gate, across the street. She was struck by the front of the vehicle.

Bolanos was pronounced dead shortly after the crash.

The Camry driver, 29, works nearby as a mechanic and was out test-driving the just-repaired vehicle before it was to be returned to its owner, police said.

There is no criminality in the crash, nor will the driver, who lives in New Cassel, be ticketed, said Abruzzo, whose squad investigated the case.

A funeral for Bolanos will be Saturday at 8:30 a.m. at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, in Jamaica, Queens.
