Neighboring students spruce up Wyandanch High School

The exterior of Wyandanch High School received a sizable makeover last month courtesy of a group of 100 students from five nearby high schools.

The "Beautification of Wyandanch High School" event resulted in the planting of more than 1,000 flowers, a repainting of various sidewalk lines, and a power-washing of the school's façade.

The idea was initiated by Young Leaders, a community group for teens launched earlier this year by Huntington resident Kevin Thorbourne.

"Still, a lot of work needs to be done, but it's a start," Thorbourne said about the school. "This gets kids mingling, and it shows the community that kids are doing the right thing."

The Home Depot in Commack donated flowers, paint and gardening gloves, Thorbourne said, while Compare Food in Wyandanch provided burgers and hot dogs for all in attendance.

In addition, Wells & Wells Equipment in Wyandanch supplied a 56-passenger bus to transport Huntington-area students to and from the event.

Other high schools represented were Elwood, Half Hollow Hills West in Dix Hills, Huntington and Walt Whitman in South Huntington.
