Newsday on Thursday night received 80 Press Club of Long Island awards in the organization's 2015 competition.
The awards were presented at an annual dinner at Woodbury Country Club and included the Robert W. Greene PCLI Public Service Award for Newsday's yearlong focus on public corruption, which started with its coverage of the assassination attempt of power broker and real estate developer Gary Melius.
PCLI, a chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists, also posthumously inducted into its Hall of Fame Newsday's first publisher and editor, Alicia Patterson, and her husband, Harry Guggenheim. The couple launched the newspaper in 1940.
The competition recognized work across various platforms, including student journalists.
Newsday and newsday.com staff won 34 first-place awards, including for its environmental coverage of illegal dumping in and around Islip Town, by Sarah Armaghan and Sarah Crichton; for its in-depth report/series "The Insiders," by Sandra Peddie and Will Van Sant; and Best Use of Twitter for Fashion Week coverage by Alison Bernicker, Nina Ruggiero, Anne Bratskeir, Joseph Amodio and Barbara Schuler.
