Cuomo watch: Controls eyed for campaign leftovers

One advocacy group is pushing Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo's corruption commission to ban candidates from transferring money from state campaign accounts to federal super PACs or political action committees. The New York Public Interest Research Group says candidates shouldn't be able to use funds raised for one particular office for other purposes.

If adopted, the change could impact Cuomo's positioning for a presidential run in 2016.

Cuomo has $28 million in his campaign account, prompting questions about how much he'll really need in his re-election campaign in 2014, and what could be done with the leftover amounts. Under current law, Cuomo could transfer the money to a federal super PAC -- as former Gov. George Pataki did when he tried to raise his national profile.
