BACKGROUND: Incumbent DeRiggi-Whitton, 41, is also on the Glen Cove Voters and Independence lines. She is the daughter of former Glen Cove Mayor Donald DeRiggi, who moved his family to the Dosoris Woods section of Glen Cove when she was an infant. She graduated from Hofstra University in 1980 and works for a company that helps clients avoid taxes on real estate transactions. She also is a volunteer and board member of the Diabetes Research Institute.
ISSUES: DeRiggi-Whitton said she favors developing the Glen Cove waterfront as a way of bringing people downtown. "We want a nice residential feel downtown to help restaurants and local businesses." She said she, Mayor Ralph V. Suozzi and her fellow city council incumbents have worked to bring down the city's fiscal deficit, which she said was $13 million when Ralph V. Suozzi took office in 2006. She said it is particularly important for city government to cut spending and boost revenues due to a decline in local industry, including the closing two years ago of the Photocircuits circuit board plant, which cost Glen Cove more than 750 jobs.
