Call, write, email: How to reach your representatives

Holding up a sign at a rally isn’t the only way to get involved in politics.

There are plenty of ways to express your views or push for change, starting with contacting your local representatives.

“It’s never been more important for people to get engaged and make their voices heard,” said a spokesman for Rep. Kathleen Rice (D-Garden City).

A phone call is one of the most effective ways to make sure your voice is heard, but level your expectations, said Dan Fingas, organizing director at the Massapequa-based activist group Long Island Progressive Coalition.

Staffers usually answer calls and take notes to relay to lawmakers.

“Just think about what is the message that I want to leave with them,” Fingas said. “They’re looking for feedback. It isn’t this confrontational process that you think it might be.”

Callers should be prepared to face mailboxes at capacity or busy signals, especially when there is a larger campaign seeking to get a lawmakers’ attention, he added. That is when an email can come in handy so you know it's gone though, he said.

Civilians aren’t limited to calling congressional officials voting on an issue at the national level. Try your local-level representatives, too, as they can help affect the policy impact on the state level, Fingas said.

“The more local it gets, the smaller the constituency and the more likely you can have an input,” he said.

Many of the lawmakers contacted said voters can reach out in whichever way is most comfortable for them.
