DAVID L. MEJIAS
BACKGROUND: Mejias, 39, of Farmingdale, also has the Independence and the Working Families lines. A legislator since 2003, and a lawyer, he is chairman of the Health and Social Services Committee and vice chairman of the Public Safety and Judiciary committees. He is a graduate of University at Albany and Fordham University's law school, and he specializes in personal injury, matrimonial and criminal law.
ISSUES: He said he is running for re-election on his record, which includes sponsoring tough laws against convicted sex offenders. He said he will keep helping overcome the many years of Republican machine politics that was "bankrupting" Nassau. He noted that he even took on his own party last year to defeat big pay raises for county legislators. He said he will fight property tax increases by finding ways to cut spending, create jobs and make living in Nassau more affordable.
